What makes a trip affordable
Three variables decide the total: how much the visa costs in money and effort, how expensive the airfare is on your dates, and how far your money goes once you land. A cheap destination with an expensive consular process is not a cheap trip.
The destinations below score well on at least two of the three for a traveller departing Lagos or Abuja.
Solo and first-trip options
These suit a traveller building confidence and travel history without a difficult application.
- West Africa overland โ Benin, Togo and Ghana in one road route, no visa required within ECOWAS
- Rwanda โ visa-free entry, direct flights from Lagos and Abuja, roughly four and a half hours
- Egypt โ dense history and low on-the-ground costs; entry is simplified if you hold a UK, US or Schengen visa
- Uganda โ accessible wildlife and lakes, with strong value outside the gorilla permits
Couples, families and groups
With three or more travellers, transfers and lodging split well and the per-person figure drops sharply.
- Kenya โ visa-free access for Nigerian passport holders, and a genuine safari plus beach combination
- Lebanon โ food, mountains and coast at prices well below Europe
- South Africa โ the strongest value per day of any long-haul option once the visa is secured
- Morocco โ an eVisa route for holders of a UK, US or Schengen visa, and excellent value inland
How to allocate the money
As a working rule, flights take the largest single share, accommodation the next, and activities less than people expect. Where a budget is tight we protect the experiences and economise on the room, because the room is the part you will not remember.
Booking flights early, travelling in shoulder season and accepting a mid-week return typically saves more than any hotel downgrade.
- Fix the visa first, then the flight, then the hotel
- Keep a contingency of around 15 per cent of the trip cost
- Price airport transfers and park or site fees before departure
- Compare the total, not the nightly rate
A note on figures
Fares, entry fees and daily costs move constantly with exchange rates and season. Treat any figure you read online โ including ours โ as an indication to be reconfirmed, and ask us to price your actual dates before you commit.
