The UK eVisa: What Changed, and How to Apply from Nigeria

The sticker in your passport is gone. Here is the current Standard Visitor route step by step — biometrics, supporting documents, realistic timelines, and the UKVI account linking stage that trips most applicants.

What the eVisa Actually Is

The UK eVisa is a digital record of your immigration status. It replaces the physical documents travellers were used to: the vignette sticker placed in the passport, biometric residence permits, and ink endorsements. Your permission to travel now lives in an online UKVI account, tied to the specific passport you applied with.

For proving status to an airline, employer or landlord, you generate a share code from that account rather than presenting a stamped page.

What Has Stayed the Same

The application still begins on the official GOV.UK portal, and Nigerian applicants still attend one in-person biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre — Lagos Island, Ikeja and Abuja, with premium centres in Benin, Enugu, Ibadan, Kano and Port Harcourt.

The evidentiary standard has not softened either. You are still asked to demonstrate financial capacity through three to six months of detailed bank statements, employment or business standing, accommodation arrangements, and credible ties to Nigeria.

  • Online application on GOV.UK
  • One biometrics appointment; you keep your passport
  • Financial, employment, accommodation and ties evidence unchanged

The Sequence, Step by Step

Complete the form with details matching your passport exactly, then download a copy for your records — it makes future applications considerably faster. Pay the fee online and save the receipt. Book the biometrics appointment, upload supporting documents online at no charge rather than paying for scanning at the centre, then attend the appointment.

Check the address on your appointment confirmation before you travel to it. Application centres in the same city sometimes operate from more than one location, and arriving at the wrong one costs the slot.

  • Complete and download the GOV.UK form
  • Pay the fee and keep the receipt
  • Schedule biometrics; upload documents online in advance
  • Attend the appointment with original documents to hand

Fees and Realistic Timelines

A Standard Visitor application was recently filed at around USD 190, but fees are revised periodically and vary by country of application, so confirm the current figure on the Home Office fee calculator before budgeting.

Standard processing is quoted at roughly three weeks. In practice decisions often arrive faster — recent applications have been decided in seven to eight working days — but you are asked not to contact UKVI before the quoted period elapses. Plan to apply at least four weeks before departure, and longer in peak season.

Supporting Documents Worth Including

A well-organised bundle does more for an application than volume. Alongside the mandatory financial and employment evidence, a short cover letter explaining your finances, employment and residency gives the caseworker the narrative in one page.

  • Cover letter summarising finances, employment and residency
  • Letter of invitation and host documents, if applicable
  • Employment letters, payslips and tax certificate
  • Three to six months of bank statements, with large credits explained
  • Passport bio-data page copy; marriage and birth certificates where relevant
  • Evidence of assets and property, if available

After Approval: Linking Your UKVI Account

Approval arrives by email, and the final step is linking the eVisa to a UKVI account — which is a separate account from the one used to apply. Create it yourself using the link in the decision email; you do not need to pay an application centre to do it for you. You will also need the UK Immigration: ID Check app to scan your passport chip.

If the chip will not read, do not panic. Test the chip with a reader app first; on many Nigerian passports the chip sits toward the back, near the coat of arms, so try scanning the reverse. If every attempt fails, you may answer that the passport has no chip and continue.

Travelling on a Digital Status

Because your permission is bound to one passport, renewing that passport before travel without updating your UKVI account will cause airline systems to fail to recognise your clearance. Update the passport details in the account before you fly, and generate a share code if a carrier or host asks for proof.

Our visa desk prepares and reviews these files daily. If you would prefer your bundle assessed before submission, send it to us — a corrected file costs far less than a refused one.
