Why the First Few Stamps Matter Most
Nigerian passport holders face some of the heaviest documentation demands in the world: months of bank statements, proof of employment, evidence of ties at home, and appointment queues that can run for weeks. The cost lands upfront whether or not the visa is granted, which is why a first application to a difficult mission is the most expensive way to start travelling.
The practical route is to build approvals in order of difficulty. Each clean entry and exit adds to a travel history that consular officers read as credibility, and destinations that ask little of you today make the Schengen, UK, US and Canadian files far stronger later. The list below is ordered for exactly that purpose.
Africa First: Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya and Benin
Rwanda grants Nigerians 30 days without a visa, and Kigali is one of the most orderly, safe and genuinely good-value cities on the continent. RwandAir flies direct from Lagos, with Nairobi as an easy alternative connection. Note that single-use plastic bags are prohibited on arrival — pack accordingly.
Ghana requires no visa at all under ECOWAS and allows stays of up to 90 days, with multiple daily flights from Lagos and Abuja. Kenya has removed the visa requirement for Nigerian citizens for stays of up to 60 days, opening safaris in Tsavo and the Maasai Mara and the Indian Ocean coast to a simple online travel authorisation. Benin Republic needs no visa either and is reachable overland from Lagos, which makes it the cheapest weekend abroad available to a Nigerian passport.
- Rwanda — 30 days visa-free; direct Lagos service on RwandAir
- Ghana — no visa, up to 90 days; several flights daily
- Kenya — visa-free for up to 60 days with online travel authorisation
- Benin Republic — no visa; accessible by road from Lagos
Island Entries: Seychelles, Mauritius and the Maldives
Seychelles issues a free 30-day visitor's permit on arrival once your travel authorisation is in order, and Mauritius grants up to 90 days free of charge on arrival. The Maldives gives a free 30-day stamp on arrival. In all three cases the visa is the easy part and the cost sits in flights and accommodation, so book early and confirm resort or island transfers before departure — they are frequently more expensive than travellers expect.
These destinations still ask for the basics at immigration: a confirmed return ticket, paid accommodation and evidence of funds. Arrive with printed copies rather than relying on airport connectivity.
- Seychelles — free 30-day permit on arrival; book beds early
- Mauritius — 90 days visa-free; show return ticket and accommodation
- Maldives — free 30-day visa on arrival; pre-book resort transfers
Asia: Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Singapore Package Route
Malaysia's eVisa is applied for online and usually decided within five to seven working days, and the country offers unusually good value for money. One rule catches travellers out: Nigerian passport holders must enter through an international airport, not a land border. Hong Kong also runs an online pre-arrival registration, with the permitted duration set by immigration.
Singapore is worth treating differently. A self-filed application is possible but rarely straightforward; the reliable path is to apply through an authorised agent as part of a packaged holiday, which is precisely how our desk files it. Expect requests for proof of onward travel and confirmed accommodation.
Documents That Travel With You
Regardless of destination, keep one folder ready and duplicated: passport valid at least six months beyond travel, confirmed return ticket, accommodation confirmations, recent bank statements, employment or business evidence, travel insurance and yellow fever certificate where required. Carry printed copies and keep digital versions in cloud storage you can reach without your phone.
A rejection is not a verdict on your future travel. Missions decide on the file in front of them, and a stronger file — better-documented funds, clearer ties, real travel history — regularly converts a previous refusal into an approval.
- Passport valid 6+ months beyond the return date
- Return ticket and paid accommodation confirmations
- 3–6 months of bank statements and employment evidence
- Travel insurance and, where required, yellow fever certificate
How Primeline Files It
Entry rules change quickly, and sometimes in your favour — Kenya's shift from paid authorisation to visa-free access happened within a single travel season. We verify the current rule for your nationality and route before any non-refundable booking is made, and we sequence applications so that the easier approvals come first.
If you are starting from a blank passport, tell us your budget and leave window and we will propose the first three journeys in the order most likely to be approved.
