The Mistakes That Sink Otherwise Strong Visa Applications

Most refusals we see are not about money. They are about incomplete forms, thin home-tie evidence and bank statements that contradict the declared income.

The form is part of the assessment

For several destinations there is no interview at all; the decision rests entirely on the application form and the documents attached to it. A contradiction between the form and a supporting document is read as inconsistency, not as a typing error.

Fill every field. Where something does not apply, write N/A rather than leaving white space, and make sure names, dates and employment details match your passport and letters exactly.

Insufficient supporting documents

The officer's question is simple: will this traveller return home? Your job is to answer it with paper. That means going beyond the published checklist and including evidence of the ties that bring you back.

  • Employment letter, and a promotion or confirmation letter where relevant
  • School admission or enrolment letter for students
  • Marriage and children's birth certificates
  • Proof of property or business ownership
  • Evidence of previous compliant travel and returns

Proof of funds is about pattern, not peak

A single large balance is weaker evidence than a consistent one. Officers read three to six months of transactions and compare inflows against the income you declared. A statement showing an income that cannot fund the trip, topped up shortly before filing, reads as a borrowed balance.

Where a large credit is genuine โ€” a property sale, a bonus, a family gift โ€” we document it in the cover letter with the supporting proof attached, rather than leaving the officer to guess.

  • Three to six months of statements, stamped by the bank
  • Payslips and a tax certificate consistent with the inflows
  • A written explanation and proof for any bulk credit
  • Funds that plausibly cover the trip as itemised in the itinerary

Timing and honesty

Applying too close to departure forces a rushed file and leaves no room for an administrative delay. Filing four or more weeks ahead of travel is the single cheapest improvement most applicants can make.

Nothing here guarantees an approval โ€” the decision belongs to the visa officer. What a careful file does is remove the avoidable reasons to say no.
