South Africa: Cape Town, the Garden Route and Johannesburg

The strongest value per day of any long-haul trip from Nigeria: two cities, a coastal drive between them and a safari day that does not need a second country.

Why this shape

South Africa's mistake is trying to drive the whole country. Cape Town and Johannesburg are about 1,400 kilometres apart; that is a flight, not a road trip. The drive worth doing is the Garden Route, which is scenic from the first hour and never boring.

Ending with a safari rather than starting with one means the trip closes on its strongest note and the early mornings come after you have adjusted to the time.

Driving and internal flights

A hire car transforms Cape Town and the Garden Route: the peninsula, the Winelands and the coastal towns all assume you have one. In Johannesburg, ride-hailing plus a guided Soweto tour is the better arrangement.

Domestic flights between the two cities are frequent and inexpensive; book them at the same time as the long-haul so the connections are protected.

  • Confirm the car hire's cross-province drop-off terms
  • Reserve Table Mountain cableway tickets on a clear-weather day
  • Pre-book Robben Island and popular Winelands tastings

Where to stay

In Cape Town, the Atlantic Seaboard and the Waterfront are the easy choices, while Constantia suits travellers who want quiet and vineyards. On the Garden Route, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are the natural bases. In Johannesburg, Sandton and Rosebank are the comfortable, well-connected districts.

Value here is unusual: the standard of hotel a mid-range budget reaches in South Africa is materially higher than the same budget buys in Europe.

Visas and practical notes

Nigerian passport holders require a visa for South Africa, filed in advance with supporting financial and itinerary evidence. Apply early; this is the part of the trip that needs lead time, not the bookings.

Summer is the Cape's season for beaches and the Winelands; game viewing in the north is often better in the drier winter months. Park fees, tastings and drives are priced separately from accommodation.

Suggested flow

A balanced itinerary

Days 1–4

Cape Town

The V&A Waterfront and Bo-Kaap, Table Mountain on the clearest morning, the Cape Peninsula loop β€” Chapman's Peak, Boulders Beach penguins, Cape Point β€” and a day in the Winelands at Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Days 5–7

Garden Route

Drive east through Hermanus and Mossel Bay to Knysna and Plettenberg Bay: lagoons, forest, ocean lookouts and a quieter South Africa.

Day 8

Fly north

Return the car at George or Port Elizabeth and fly to Johannesburg, keeping the long inland drive out of your holiday.

Days 9–10

Johannesburg and Pretoria

The Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill, Soweto with a local guide, Maboneng for food, and Pretoria's Union Buildings.

Days 11–12

Safari finish

A private reserve in the Pilanesberg or Waterberg for two nights of morning and evening game drives, then back to Johannesburg for the flight home.
