Why Kenya Does Safari and Beach Better Than Most
Geography does the work. Tsavo sits between Nairobi and the coast, so it falls naturally on the way rather than demanding a detour or a second domestic flight. The contrast is the real pleasure: two days in red dust and dry acacia watching elephants the colour of the earth, then two days barefoot on white sand with a fresh coconut.
Five days is genuinely enough for both halves, provided you commit to two destinations. Adding a third park is the single decision that converts a restorative trip into a logistics exercise.
Travelling by Rail: The Madaraka Express
The SGR leaves Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau three times a day in each direction, and all three services call at Voi. The 08:00 Inter-County reaches Voi around midday and Mombasa at 14:00 — the right choice for the safari leg. The 15:00 Afternoon Express reaches Voi in the early evening and Mombasa at 20:30, and the 22:00 Night Express arrives around 03:55.
Book through Kenya Railways or the official app, and book early for weekends and public holidays because the train does sell out. The name on the ticket must match the passport you travel with. First or premium class is worth the difference for the longer legs, though economy is perfectly comfortable on shorter runs.
- 08:00 Inter-County — Voi around midday, Mombasa 14:00

Where to Base Each Half
For the safari, the choice is between staying near Voi and entering Tsavo East for the classic big-park experience, or booking a private conservancy lodge with its own waterhole where the wildlife comes to you and park entry becomes optional. Conservancy stays typically include two game drives a day, sundowners and all meals, and they suit travellers who want privacy over checklists.
In Diani, a full-service five-star resort with direct beach access suits travellers who want everything on site; a one-bedroom villa with a pool suits couples and solo travellers; a multi-bedroom villa with an in-house chef suits families and groups. If you want the chef, arrange it before arrival rather than on the day.
- Near Voi + Tsavo East entry — classic landscapes, big-park scale
- Private conservancy lodge — fewer vehicles, wildlife at the waterhole
- Diani resort, villa or group house — choose by party size, not star rating
Practical Notes and Costs
Tsavo East park fees are charged per 24 hours and vary by residency status — East African citizens pay the lowest rate, non-residents the highest, with children and students at roughly half. Fees are paid through the eCitizen platform and are revised periodically, so confirm the current tariff before you budget.
The Likoni ferry that everyone used to complain about is no longer part of the journey: the Mombasa Southern Bypass connects the terminus area directly to the South Coast, and most Diani transfers now take between 45 minutes and just over an hour.
Nigerian passport holders currently enter Kenya without a visa for stays of up to 60 days, subject to online travel authorisation — one reason this itinerary is among the easiest long-haul-feeling trips to arrange from Lagos or Abuja.
- Confirm the Voi pickup in writing — station signal is unreliable
- Neutral colours for the bush; a warm layer for pre-dawn drives
- June–October and January–March are the driest months for both halves
- Green-season travel brings better rates and far fewer vehicles
Running It in Reverse
The itinerary flips comfortably: train down to Mombasa on day one, two or three nights in Diani, then back up to Voi for the safari before continuing to Nairobi. If you do it this way, spend the money on the conservancy lodge — ending on a quiet all-inclusive where the wildlife arrives at the waterhole is a far softer landing than ending on a busy beach.
Suggested flow
A balanced itinerary
Day 1
Nairobi to Voi by rail
Board the 08:00 Inter-County service from Nairobi Terminus at Syokimau and reach Voi around midday. The line runs through Tsavo, so the safari effectively begins at the window — elephants, giraffe and zebra are regular sightings. Lodge pickup should be confirmed in writing before departure.
Day 2
Tsavo East and the conservancies
An early game drive when the park is at its best, an unhurried middle of the day, then an afternoon drive running into sundowners. Tsavo East is enormous and uncrowded, famous for its red-dust elephants and the Galana River; smaller private conservancies nearby deliver equally strong sightings with far fewer vehicles.
Day 3
Voi to Diani Beach
Rejoin the train at Voi, continue to Mombasa Terminus at Miritini, and transfer roughly an hour along the Southern Bypass to Diani. With transfers arranged in advance you can be on a sun lounger by late afternoon.
Days 4–5
The coast, at coastal pace
Soft white sand, warm shallow water and tuk-tuks on the main road. Two full days are enough to do very little, which is rather the point. If you want movement: a dhow cruise, snorkelling at Kisite Marine Park, or a morning with the coastal wildlife parks.
Day 6
Homeward
Fly out of Ukunda or Moi International in Mombasa, or take the train back up to Nairobi if your international connection sits there. Keep a protected buffer either way.
