The one rule that matters
Cairo is decided by traffic. A plan that crosses the city twice in a day will fail regardless of how reasonable it looks on a map. We group each day geographically — Giza on one side, the old city on the other — and keep the transfers short.
Arriving at the Giza plateau early is the other non-negotiable: it is cooler, quieter and better for photographs, and it leaves the afternoon for the museum.
Getting around
Ride-hailing works well and removes the fare negotiation entirely. For the sites themselves, an accredited Egyptologist guide changes the experience from a photo stop into a day you remember, and is worth the cost for the pyramids and the museum.
Camel and horse touts are persistent at Giza. Agree a price and a duration in writing before you sit on anything.
- Use ride-hailing rather than street taxis
- Book a licensed guide for Giza and the museum
- Carry small notes for tips, fees and cafés
Where to stay
Two sensible options: a pyramid-view hotel in Giza, where the sound-and-light show comes to your terrace and the plateau is minutes away, or a central Nile-side hotel with better food and a commute to Giza. Mid-range hotels in Maadi and Heliopolis are good value but sit further from the sites.
Dining is a highlight rather than an afterthought — the 9 Pyramids Lounge inside the plateau, the rooftops around Downtown, and the cafés of Zamalek all merit a booking.
Entry and reconfirmation
Confirm the current entry route for a Nigerian passport before ticketing; holding a valid UK, US or Schengen visa simplifies it, and a visa on arrival has historically been available at a published fee. There have been reports of boarding disputes on this route, so we obtain written airline confirmation.
Site tickets, camera permits and opening hours change. Everything here should be reconfirmed close to your travel date.
Suggested flow
A balanced itinerary
Day 1
Arrive and ease in
Check in, walk the Nile Corniche, and take an early dinner. Most arrivals from Nigeria land tired.
Day 2
Giza and the Egyptian Museum
Reach the pyramid complex between 08:00 and 10:00 and give it two to three hours, then the Egyptian Museum, then lunch. In the evening, the sound-and-light show viewed from a terrace restaurant or a pyramid-view hotel.
Day 3
Coptic and Islamic Cairo
The Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, the Mosque of Ahmad ibn Tulun, then the Hanging Church and Coptic Cairo, closing with Khan el-Khalili and mint tea at a bazaar café.
Day 4
Al-Azhar and a slow finish
Al-Azhar Mosque and Al-Azhar Park for the view over the old city, a café afternoon in Zamalek, then the airport transfer with plenty of buffer.
