How to split the nights
Most first-time itineraries give Istanbul most of the trip and Cappadocia two nights. We would do the opposite of what instinct suggests: six nights in Cappadocia and four in Istanbul is a defensible split, because the valleys reward slow days and a second chance at the balloon.
Istanbul is a city you will return to. Cappadocia is a place you want to have seen properly once.
The visa is the planning constraint
For Nigerian passport holders the electronic visa route generally depends on holding a valid UK, US or Schengen visa or residence permit. Without one, the application is a full consular file and takes considerably longer, and applications submitted weeks in advance have still arrived late.
For that reason we hold accommodation on free-cancellation terms and keep flights changeable until the visa is in hand. It costs slightly more and it has saved trips.
- Confirm your eVisa eligibility before setting dates
- Book cancellable accommodation while the visa is pending
- Allow considerably more time than the stated minimum
Balloons, and the honest caveat
Balloon flights are cancelled for wind or poor visibility and no operator can promise otherwise. Booking your flight for the first available morning of a multi-night stay gives you a second and third attempt; booking it for your only morning gives you none.
Choose an operator on safety record and briefing quality rather than on price, and confirm what the fee actually includes.
Where to stay
In Istanbul, the Historic Peninsula puts the monuments on foot while Karaköy, Galata and Beşiktaş give better food and evenings; the Asian side is calmer and cheaper. In Cappadocia, Göreme is central and social, Uçhisar quieter with the better views, and a cave room is worth the small premium.
Turkish Airlines connects Lagos and Abuja to Istanbul directly and onward to the Cappadocian airports, which keeps the internal logistics simple.
